Berlin Police Catch Hundreds In Distracted Driving Campaign

BERLIN, CT - Berlin Police's campaign to crack down on distracted driving resulted in 139 citations for texting on a mobile phone and 195 citations for talking on a mobile phone. Twenty-nine of those citations were for second offenses and one was for a third offense.

The "U Drive. U Text. U Pay" campaign is part of a joint effort by local police, the state Department of Transportation and the National Highway Safety Administration to curb distracted driving.

"The goal of the campaign and enforcement effort was to educate motorists and reduce the number of motor vehicle crashes and injuries that involve distracted drivers," a statement from police says. "The Berlin Police and the Connecticut Department of Transportation urge you to put your phone down when you get behind the wheel. If you need to text, pull over and park your vehicle in a safe place first."
