BERLIN, CT — While most towns start school next week, one of the state's earliest first days of school is in Berlin, where classes resume on Thursday, Aug. 24.

As a result, the Berlin Police Department Monday issued a warning to folks to be wary of that and to abide by the rules of the road, especially as they pertain to school buses.

"Please be alert for children walking or waiting at bus stops and allow extra time in your commute for school bus activity," wrote the BPD via social media.

The department also reminded motorists of the potentially costly mistake of disobeying the flashing red lights of a school bus picking up or dropping off a pupil.

Police said scofflaws in this instance are looking at a $475 fine at the very least and, possibly, "much more."
