Factory Chemical Spill In Berlin Sends 5 To Hospital: Police

The incident happened at a local manufacturer Tuesday morning.

BERLIN, CT β€” Local responders Tuesday morning rushed to a local employer impacted by a chemical spill.

According to the Berlin Police Department, the incident was at about 9:13 a.m. at TigHitco, 245 Old Brickyard Lane, Berlin.

The company is an aerospace industry manufacturer that serves many major companies in the aerospace and aviation industries.

Police said Berlin firefighters, police and emergency medical services personnel were called to the plant Tuesday morning.

"Upon arrival the building had been evacuated and a number of employees were complaining of minor effects related to the chemical spill," wrote the BPD in a release issued late Tuesday morning.

Police said EMS transported five persons to the hospital as a precaution and 22 employees were treated on scene but did not need further medical care.

According to the BPD, it was determined that a machine had malfunctioned causing a minor chemical spill.

Police said the Berlin fire marshal and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were on the scene evaluating the situation.

In addition, police said, a cleanup company had been called to eradicate the spill.

"There is no danger to the public and the minor spill was contained within the building in the area of the machine," wrote the BPD.

Police said there was a total of about 150 employees working at the time and all employees were released for the rest of the day while the spill was being remediated.
