Linda Listens: What I’m Hearing at the Doors in Berlin and Southington

One of the greatest privileges of running for State Representative has been walking through Berlin and Southington, knocking on doors, and listening to the people who call these communities home.

And one thing is clear: people love Berlin and Southington.

Again and again, residents tell me how much they appreciate living here. They describe our towns as beautiful, safe, and welcoming. They value our neighborhoods, our schools, our open spaces, and small community that makes this town their home.

Of course, people also have concerns.

I hear about the rising cost of utilities, the price at the gas pump, and the increasing cost of food and everyday necessities.

Families are working hard, and many are feeling the pressure of an economy that makes it increasingly difficult to get ahead.

But what has been most prevalent during my conversations is how often residents want to talk about something much bigger: what is happening at the federal level.

People are extraordinarily concerned about the direction of the country under President Donald Trump.

They are worried about war and instability, the cost of gasoline, and changes within federal agencies responsible for issues that directly affect our daily lives—from food safety and health care to environmental protection.

What I hear at the doors is a deep concern about how the federal government is no longer protecting the institutions and safeguards the people of the United States depend upon—and whether states like Connecticut will retain the ability to make decisions that reflect the needs and values of their own residents.

Those concerns are not theoretical. Connecticut has repeatedly challenged actions by the federal government that state officials argue interfere with state authority or impose conditions on federal funding.

In recent months, Connecticut's Attorney General has joined legal challenges involving federal election policy, funding conditions, personal data, and other questions involving the relationship between state and federal authority.

That matters to me.

If I have the privilege of representing Berlin and Southington in Hartford, my responsibility will be to fight for the people of our district and to protect Connecticut's ability to make decisions for itself within the powers granted to our state.

I believe Connecticut should be prepared to defend its residents, its institutions, and its authority when federal actions threaten the policies and protections our state has chosen to establish.

I will stand up for Connecticut's right to make its own decisions. I will support efforts to protect our communities, our environment, our health, and the programs that Connecticut residents depend on.

And I will not be silent when I believe federal overreach threatens our state or the people who live here.

That doesn't mean ignoring the challenges we face at home. Property taxes matter. Schools matter. Public safety matters. The cost of electricity, groceries, and gasoline matters.

Those are the issues I will continue to hear about—and work on—in Hartford.

But listening to Berlin and Southington residents has reminded me of something else: people understand that what happens in Washington can have consequences right here at home.

They are paying attention.

And so am I.

As your State Representative, I promise to keep listening, to keep showing up, and to stand up for Connecticut's ability to protect its people and determine its own future.

Because the voices I hear at the door deserve to be heard in Hartford, too.
