NEW BRITAIN, CT — A New Britain man has pleaded guilty to charges that he stole U.S. Postal Service property, according to a statement from Leonard C. Boyle, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut. Steven Knox, 45, pleaded guilty to theft of government property.

He is scheduled for sentencing Jan. 22 and faces a maximum prison term of 10 years. Knox is released on a $100,000 bond.

According to prosecutors, a tire shed at a postal service vehicle maintenance facility in Hartford was burglarized May 19 and 43 tires were stolen.

The facility’s surveillance video showed a pickup truck pulling up to the tire shed at about 1:30 a.m. Knox and another person then broke into the shed, loaded tires into the bed of pickup, and drove off, prosecutors said in the statement.

Knox was formerly employed by a USPS towing contractor and possessed a key card to access the vehicle maintenance facility’s gate. Knox then sold the stolen tires, which had a value of $3,836, to a tire shop in New Britain for $1,500, according to prosecutors.
