Postal Employee Sentenced In Mail Theft Case

A Waterbury woman and U.S. Postal worker has been sentenced in a mail theft case.

WATERBURY, CT — A Waterbury woman was sentenced to three years of probation recently for stealing mail while employed by the U.S. Postal Service, according to a statement from federal prosecutors. Careema Lewis, 33, will also be required to perform 100 hours of community service while on probation.

Lewis was employed by the postal service between September 2018 and January 2019 in Plymouth. During that time, federal prosecutors say she stole numerous pieces of mail, specifically greeting cards that contained gift cards or other items of value.

When confronted by investigators in January 2019, Lewis admitted that she stole “between 20 and 50” gift cards from the mail. Lewis surrendered about 10 gift cards that she had stolen from greeting cards and 17 pieces of stolen mail that she had in her vehicle and her purse.
