WEATHER UPDATE: Heavy Snow, Ice Hitting Berlin Today

The National Weather Service’s Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday.

In a storm that already dumped several inches of snow on the area overnight, the heavy snow is expected to pick up to a rate of one to three inches an hour Monday afternoon.

The heavy snow also could be mixed with sleet.

The National Weather Service says an additional 5 to 9 inches of snow is expected by the time the storm winds down. North winds up to 10 mph with gusts of 21 mph also are forecast, driving wind chills to below zero.

The snow is expected to end about 8 p.m.

• This Afternoon: Snow and sleet, becoming all snow after 3pm. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 22. North wind 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.
  
• Tonight: A chance of snow, mainly before 8pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 4. Wind chill values as low as -5. Northwest wind 8 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  
• Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 21. Wind chill values as low as -8. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon.
  
• Tuesday Night: A slight chance of snow showers after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 12. South wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
• Wednesday: A slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  
• Wednesday Night: A chance of snow showers, mainly after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 20. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  
• Thursday: A chance of snow showers before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 26. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  
• Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 1.
