New England Ballet Theatre Brings ‘Little Mermaid’ To West Hartford

The regional ballet company will present its original ballet adaptation of 'The Little Mermaid' this weekend at a local school.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — New England Ballet Theatre will present its original production of The Little Mermaid during two performances on Saturday/Sunday, June 6 and 7 at The Roberts Theater at Kingswood Oxford School, 170 Kingswood Road.

The family-friendly ballet reimagines the classic story as an uplifting adventure featuring original choreography by Rachael Gnatowski and new costumes designed by Fiona Burlin.

Performances are scheduled for Saturday, June 6, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 7, at 2 p.m. The Sunday matinee will be offered as a sensory-friendly performance.

According to the company, the production follows a young mermaid through an underwater world of friendship, courage and discovery, culminating in a happy ending designed for audiences of all ages.

“This is a version of The Little Mermaid families can truly enjoy together,” choreographer Rachael Gnatowski said. “It has all the magic and wonder people love, but with warmth, humor, and a happy ending.”

The production is one of the largest in New England Ballet Theatre's history, featuring approximately 90 performers.

The cast includes 20 professional dancers from New England Ballet Theatre and nearly 70 student performers.

Five dancers from the organization's Bridges to Ballet program, an adaptive dance initiative that provides ballet opportunities for students of all abilities, will also participate in the production.

Together, the performers bring to life an undersea world populated by mermaids, sea creatures, sailors, royalty, and magical transformations.
