World Series Champion to Take Reins in New Britain

One of the stars of the 1986 New York Mets championship team has been named manager of the New Britain Bees.

NEW BRITAIN, CT — New York Mets fans in the area, rejoice, as one of the franchise's most popular players will be spending next summer in central Connecticut.

The New Britain Bees have named Wally Backman as the second manager in team history. Backman replaces Stan Cliburn and joins the Bees for his first season in the Atlantic League and 20th as a manager in professional baseball.

“Wally Backman is a proven winner,” Bees general manager Brad Smith said. “His ability to instill a winning atmosphere and put an entertaining club on the field are two significant factors in bringing him aboard. We look forward to a successful 2018 season working with Wally and hope everyone joins us in welcoming him to the central Connecticut community.”

Backman has spent 19 years as a field manager in the professional ranks, most notably with the Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets organizations. He has led three different teams to league championships, the first coming in 1999 with the Tri-City Posse of the Independent Western Baseball League. His second managerial championship came with the Birmingham Barons (AA, White Sox) of the Southern League in 2002, and his third was earned in 2007 with the South Georgia Peanuts of the Independent South Coast League. He also managed the 2010 Brooklyn Cyclones (A, Mets) and the 2014 Las Vegas 51’s (AAA, Mets) to regular season first place finishes. The 58-year-old owns 1,066 career victories as a professional manager.

“I’m excited to get going in New Britain,” says Backman. “Atlantic League teams care about winning and helping players careers grow. Those are two things I am very passionate about. I look forward to working with everyone there. Our team will play the game with passion and give their best effort every day. We are going to put a great product on the field that fans will be proud of.”
