BETHEL, CT — The community is grieving following the death of 12-year-old Bethel Middle School student Macedo Silveira. A "victim of depression," according to a GoFundMe campaign established in her name, Silveira passed away at her home in Bethel on Saturday.

Parents and staff were notified of Silveira's passing in a letter distributed Monday by the superintendent and middle school principal. Counselors were made available at the school on Monday, and parents were urged to call a crisis response hotline if they felt their own children might be at risk.

More than $17,200 had been raised from 372 people in just three days, according to the campaign page, which named her parents Marcia and Erik and sister Alyss as her nearest family.
