Bethel Elementary Schools Renovation Gets Boost From Coronavirus

When the schools cleared out early for the lockdown, renovation at Johnson and Rockwell elementary schools could start early.

BETHEL, CT — The timelines for the renovation projects at R.M.T. Johnson and Anna H. Rockwell Elementary Schools have been accelerated as a result of the coronavirus lockdown, Bethel Schools Superintendent Christine Carver said in a letter to parents on Friday.

Although there were some supply chain hiccups and a "minor interruption to the workforce" as a result of the virus outbreak, both projects remain on time and under budget, according to Carver.

Contingencies were built into the budgets of both projects, and were meant to accommodate any unforeseen issues associated with the construction. The COVID-19 pandemic had the overall beneficial effect of clearing the workspaces for construction earlier than planned.

The furniture and technology bids for both phases of the project came in "significantly" under budget, Carver said, and both will be in place for a September reopening. The designs for the new playground have been approved by the state, and that is also on track for a fall installation. Existing playgrounds at both schools will be used prior to completion.

The new addition at Johnson School has been completed, with a few "punch list items" that need to be finished, Carver said. Completion of parking and bus loops is underway, and "no issues" are anticipated with the opening of all academic areas.

"There may be some delay on completion of the gym and music space," Carver said.

At Rockwell School, the second floor is completed, and the first floor is completely demoed, with the last of the abatement being completed. "The priority of the project is to complete all academic spaces for Kindergarten and 1st grade, the kitchen, and nurse’s office. The music room, gym, and other spaces should be completed shortly after the beginning of school," Carver said.

"The overall project is still under budget with a healthy contingency."
