Bethel Schools Renovation Proceeding Under Budget: Carver
The renovation of the Anna H. Rockwell and Ralph M. T. Johnson Elementary Schools in Bethel is on target, according to the superintendent.
BETHEL, CT — Schools Superintendent Christine Carver provided parents with an update on the progress of the renovation of the Anna H. Rockwell and Ralph M. T. Johnson Elementary Schools on Friday. Both projects are on schedule and under budget, she wrote in her weekly newsletter to parents.
| Johnson School | Rockwell School | |
|---|---|---|
| Projected Cost | $41,107,711 | $24,723,432 |
| Actual Cost | $39,818,513 | $25,892,232 |
| Difference | $1,289,198 | $(1,168,800) |
| Uncommitted Contingency to Date | $2,757,355* | $1,456,800 |
Contingencies were built into the budgets of both projects, and are meant to accommodate any unforeseen issues associated with the construction. No contingencies will be triggered in the schools renovation projects without change orders being issued, according to Carver.
"Change orders are additions or deletions from the approved project scope initiated by the owner or due to field conditions/hidden conditions outside of the control of the constructor," Carver wrote in her newsletter. "A change order that is approved becomes an eligible expense and is reimbursed through the grant. Regardless, the contingencies are there to deal with those unforeseen issues."

The asterisk [*] above is an indicator that the Public Building and Site Committee did approve a small change order at Johnson School, which has not yet been reflected in any official budget progress reports, according to Carver.
The January Progress Report for both renovation projects is available online.
