Bethel High School Lockdown: Police, K-9 Units Search School

Bethel police and K-9 units searched student lockers and bathrooms for illegal substances.

BETHEL, CT-- Bethel High School was on lockdown Monday morning as police and K-9 units searched the school as part of a mock "hold situation," according to a letter sent home to parents and guardians.

Nobody was allowed to leave the classroom or the building during the drill as K-9 units from the Bethel Police Department and surrounding towns walked the hallways.

Bethel Board of Education Policy #5145.12b states:

“When necessary to protect the health and safety of students, employees or property, and for the purpose of detecting the presence of illegal substances or contraband, including alcohol and/or drugs, the Board shall permit the administration to invite law enforcement agencies or other qualified agencies or individuals to search school property with specially trained dogs.”

The K-9 units focused on student lockers and bathrooms in order "to uphold our commitment to a safe and drug-free school," the letter stated. This is the third time such a drill took place and so far no illegal substances have been found.
