Bethel Residents Speak Out on Budget Proposal During Public Hearing: Report

Residents spoke out about potential school cuts, social services and tax increases during the hearing.

BETHEL, CT — Residents talked social services, tax increases and the schools budget during Monday night's budget hearing, reports the News Times.

During a hearing on the The Board of Finance-approved $72.9 million budget, residents sought relief from tax increases and opposed the board's decision to not make Social Services Director Jen Lawlor a full-time employee. Lawlor as well as Bethel Community Food Pantry President Steve Deuschle spoke out in support of the investment in social services.

The publication reports that several residents spoke in support of the schools budget, and Superintendent Christine Carver said the school district could lose positions if the town had to pay $4.2 million for teacher pensions under the governor's proposed funding.
