12 unit apartment building at 97 Grassy Plain St at around 725 pm on Wed Oct 22.
The fire dept discovered an active fire in the basement of the building in a storage area. The FD quickly extinguished the fire. Prior to the fire department arrival, Bethel Police Officers assisted in evacuating residents from the apartments and making sure everyone was out.

A required local fire alarm system with a smoke detector in the basement detected the fire and quickly alerted residents.
The basement received extensive fire, heat and smoke damage. Approximately 18 occupants of the 12 apartments had to be relocated and not allowed to return to their units due to the damage in the basement and smoke damage to several of the apartment units.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross assisted occupants with housing and other personal needs.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation at this time by the Bethel Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bethel Police Dept with assistance provided by a the Ct State Fire Marshal’s Office.
