Bethel Student Remembered As Community Rallies Around Family

A fundraiser has been launched as the Bethel and Danbury communities come together to support his family.

BETHEL, CT — A Bethel High School student and the son of Danbury restaurant owners is being remembered by the community following his death this week.

Matteo Bernabe, a senior and member of Bethel High School's Class of 2026, died on March 17, according to a GoFundMe created in his memory. He was 17 years old.

Bernabe's family owns Pancho's Tacos Mexican Restaurant in Danbury, according to community members.

The GoFundMe aims to help cover funeral expenses and support his family.

According to the fundraiser, Matteo had been battling Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. He was first diagnosed in July 2024 at age 15, when the disease was found in his femur and lungs.

He underwent months of treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, and was later told he was cancer-free in mid-2025. The cancer returned later that year and progressed, according to the fundraiser.

Despite his illness, Matteo remained closely connected to his school community. Organizers said classmates, teachers, and administrators helped ensure he could take part in important moments during his senior year, including receiving his diploma.

Services are scheduled for March 19 at Cornell Memorial Home in Danbury from 5 to 8 p.m., with a Mass set for March 20 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at 11 a.m., according to a memorial notice shared online.

The fundraiser has drawn support from across the Bethel and Danbury communities, with donations and messages honoring Matteo and his family.
