Frank A. Berry School students in Bethel have been evacuated due to smoke in the school, WFSB reports.

Lt. Brendan Patrick Ryan of the Bethel Fire Department told Patch that a small part of the school’s air handling HVAC unit on top of the building malfunctioned which caused the smoke to be forced into the school.

“The company swapped out the part. Luckily the company happened to be right there so there was no danger. The kids were on the lawn, we cleared out the smoke and the kids are all okay,” Ryan said.

Bethel’s Engine 5, Tower and Engine 1 from Stony Hill all responded, as well as the First Selectman.

“Students are expected to return to the school,” Ryan said, “No one was hurt.”

Patch will update this story as more news becomes available.
