The Bethel Middle School (BMS) "Tigerball" Tournament raised $1800 for the Scotty Fund, a non-profit, charitable organization that provides financial and family support to children with life-threatening or critical illness.

On Tuesday, March 12, 2013, seventh and eighth grade BMS students eagerly looked forward to the sixth annual "Tigerball" game which took place from 2:45p.m. to 5:00p.m in the BMS gymnasium.  The event was attended by over 300 students, teachers, administrators, staff and family members.

"TIGERBALL…DUN, DUN, DUN!" was a fun phrase students heard during the morning announcements over the loudspeaker in the two weeks preceding a well anticipated event at BMS.  Instructions then followed, such as indicating a deadline for teams to be formed and then submitting that information to the Physical Education Department.

Students scrambled to form their teams and some even approach a teacher to sponsor their team.  There were 29 teams, 25 of them were sponsored by teachers. Colorful creative team t-shirts were then made by the students.

"Tigerball" is a double elimination dodgeball tournament for seventh and eight graders. There are five students per team, and the game is played with a soft, medium-size ball.  The teams are coed and consist of a 3:2 ratio, boys/girls or girls/boys.  The team that eliminated all the opponent's team players each time won the round and went on to another round.

Eventually it came down to two teams, the Meehanators vs. Cease and Desisto, for the battle for the win. Team "Cease and DeSistos" sponsored by Language Arts teacher Ms. Shelly DeSisto, was the winner.  "Cease and DeSistos" team members were: Jason Henry, Travis Coons, Isabella Oprea, Josh Casali, and Stephanie Bierce. It was the first time ever in Tigerball history that a 7th Grade team won the tournament.

The event was organized by the BMS Physical Education and Health Department, Keith Marotta, Erin Tegmier, Steve Schrader and Nate Rinas.

This event was open to the public with an entrance fee of $1 to watch the game. The team fee was $50 a team. All the proceeds went to the SCOTTY Fund.
