Retirement can be stressful since stress is defined as any change that we must adapt to. All stress is not bad, it's essential to life. It is how we respond to the stressful experience that determines the impact stress will have on your life.
The capacity for work decreases approximately 1% a year after the age of 21. A person 50 years old can still work at 70% of their capacity for work they had at 20. Unfortunately, many 50 year olds attempt to continue hours and patterns that were easy to accomplish in their 20's. This can lead to coronary artery disease and other conditions.
Chronic or persistent stress can occur when the stressors of life are unrelenting, as they are while undergoing divorce or coping with a chronic or life-threatening illness. Chronic stress can also occur when little stressors accumulate and you're unable to recuperate from any of them. As long as the mind perceives a threat, the body remains aroused.

One of the easiest ways to stop the stress response is to breathe deeply & slowly. Begin by breathing in through the nose. Count to 5 silently saying "in", and let your lower abdomen fill with air. Then count to 5, silently saying "out", as you let the air escape through pursed lips. Do this deep breathing for 2 minutes or more each time.
