Holy Humor service is laughable

Bulletin bloopers, jokes about church life, silly outfits- all part of Sunday's celebration of resurrection joy.

The First Congregational Church of Bethel, 46 Main Street, Bethel invites everyone to join them for Holy Humor Sunday, their annual celebration of the resurrection, God’s cosmic joke on the power of evil.

Our theme this year is New Life is Springing Up. Please wear something colorful and fun to church! Funny hats, floral and tropical prints, silly sunglasses- you get the idea. We will sing Easter carols, share funny stories and celebrate the Good News of Christ’s Resurrection.

For centuries, in Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant countries, Easter Monday and Bright Sunday (the Sunday after Easter) were observed by the faithful as days of joy and laughter with parties and picnics to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. Parishioners and pastors played practical jokes on each other, drenched each other with water, sang, and danced. It was a time for clergy and people to tell jokes and to have fun. These customs were rooted in the musings of early church theologians that God played a practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead.
