Obituary: Gerard Brooker, Of Bethel, Staples High School Teacher

BETHEL, CT — Gerard Thomas Brooker, 84, of Bethel, passed from this life peacefully Jan. 1, 2021 surrounded by family. Gerard was born February 24, 1936 in Queens,NY, to George and Rita Brooker.

Gerard was a teacher of English for over four decades and chairman of the English Department at Staples High School for 25 years. "Jerry" was an educator and humanitarian. He held a doctorate degree in Education and was a dedicated humanitarian. He tirelessly worked locally and around the world for children in need and promoting peace. After retiring he continued his passion for education, traveling, and writing.

He is predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth, Robert, Wallace and sisters, Joan, Gertrude, and infant Eileen. Jerry is survived by his sister Eileen Olm (Bill), his wife, Sheila, five children and their spouses, daughters Jessica & (Jamie) Couture, Suzanne & (David) Remington, sons Kevin and (Jill) Brooker, Jay & (Jennifer) Brooker, David Brooker. Nine grandchildren, two great-granddaughters and his beloved nieces and nephews.

Jerry enjoyed traveling, watching nature, entertaining, being with family and friends, reading, sharing his joy of life. His legacy of giving, and charitable works will live on in all those who had the blessing to know him.

There are no calling hours. Due to the current pandemic, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Bethel Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
