Viewfinder: Bethel Fire Department Drills [VIDEO]

Check out photos and a video from one of the monthly drills.

Pat Morton of the Bethel Fire Department invited Patch to attend a Monthly firefighter safety and extraction drill on Monday.

The men and women volunteers attend these drills to learn new procedures and protocol for emergency calls of all kinds.

The "tag in" at the beginning of every call, is done and they gather to listen to the chief go over what they are learning tonight.

The "jaws of life" are brought out and the team begins to remove a car door completely from its hinges.

They discussed the issues with mutli-airbag car safety and deployment or accidental deployment of them during an emergency.

The number one concern is safety, of both the victim and the attending emergency personnel. Airbags can trigger from cell phone or ipod power sources and cars with push start can be activated within 24 inches of the keys. The suggestion was to take and throw the keys far away from the vehicle so no ignition can be done during the crash or impact.

The BVFD and SHFD are always in need of more volunteers. For more information, visit stonyhillfiredepartment.com or bvfdinc.com.
