Academy of Kempo Martial Arts - Book Drive / Book Swap

The Academy of Kempo Martial Arts in Hamden is holding their 1st Book Drive / Book Swap. The Academy will be collecting slightly used books for their Read for Power Book Swap. Shihan Frank Ciarleglio, the instructor at the Academy, came up with this idea when he accompanied his daughter and her class to New Haven Reads. “I thought that New Haven Reads did such a great job with the children on the school trip and I learned about how they help the community and I wanted to get involved to help spread the word and support them,” Ciarleglio said.

So Ciarleglio designed a program that will not only help to collect books for New Haven Reads but also help the part of the community that he is involved in by offering his students, their family and friends the opportunity to get involved by donating books for New Haven Reads . Ciarleglio’s goal is to also help empower his students, their family and friends by being able to swap out their books and bring home new reading materials for themselves and their family. “The Read for Power Book Swap Program is based on some of the same principles as New Haven Reads, helping to bring reading materials to the local and neighboring communities. We are expecting to collect many more books than we give out and all of those extra books will go directly to New Haven Reads to support their efforts,” Ciarleglio said.

The Academy will be collecting books from now until April 16, 2015 and will be holding their Read for Power Book Swap on Friday April 17, 2015 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
