Anti-Semitism Runs Rampant At Amity High, Students Say: Report

Students told the Board of Education last night that they don't feel safe at the school.

BETHANY/ORANGE/WOODBRIDGE — One-by-one Amity High students addressed the Board of Education Monday night and the theme was the same. They told school officials they don't feel safe at school and that anti-Semitism has run rampant at the school, the New Haven Register reports.

Numerous Swastikas have been found at the school and Jewish families have had their homes vandalized, the Register reports. Students say the anti-Semitism is not new at Amity.

One student told the school board, via the New Haven Register, that “It was emotionally exhausting to be in school today. The hate in this school is bigger than us.” Several students wept.

Fox 61 obtained a letter from Amity High Principal Anna Mahon who said school officials will work with the anti-Defamation League and the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven. More police will patrol the High School and counseling is being set up for students.

In the letter Mahon wrote, "Dear High School Community, I was deeply moved by the public comment session during tonight’s Board of Education Meeting. There is no place for hate, intolerance or lack of safety for any student or member of our school community. The immediate plan to address the concerns raised at the Board of Education is to continue the conversation with students. To that end, we will be holding meetings throughout the day, and the rest of the week, with students."
