Bethany Ice Cream Shop's Signs Lead To Zoning Debate

A Bethany ice cream shop's signs in Woodbridge have led to a disagreement about whether they are allowed by zoning regulations.

BETHANY, CT — A Bethany ice cream shop's signs in Woodbridge have led to a debate over whether the signs meet zoning regulations. Kriz Farm filed an appeal to maintain their signs on the corners of Route 67 and Bear Hill Road and Route 67 and Acorn Hill Road.

Kriz Farm posted the following on Facebook: "Apparently, there were 'numerous complaints' (which we’re told were anonymous) reported to the town which prompted the Zoning Enforcement Officer to notify us that we are required to remove the signs."

Kriz Farm asked supporters to come to a recent Zoning Board of Appeals meeting at Woodbridge Town Hall.

The ice cream shop, which opened three years ago, placed the signs on the private property of Woodbridge residents who gave their consent, according to The New Haven Register. Owner Wendy Kriz said she received a letter in May stating the signs were not allowed. She said she hoped to come to a compromise with the town as the signs are crucial to attracting business.

The town's zoning regulations permit businesses to install signs in residential districts but Zoning Enforcement Officer Kristine Sullivan wrote that "Business signs for businesses not located in Woodbridge are not allowed," The New Haven Register reported.
