Bethany Man Charged With 1st Degree Sexual Assault
Relationship with minor alleged to have happened over an extended period of time

Today at 1:15 p.m. State Police arrested Matthew Root, 39, of 229 Bear Hill Road in Bethany, and charged him with 1st degree sexual assault, impairing the morals of a minor, and possession of a controlled substance.
Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad detectives took Root into custody and processed him at Troop I in Bethany.
According to state police, a complaint was filed by the alleged juvinile victim on Nov. 11 in which she stated she had entered into a forced sexual relationship with Root which is alleged to have occurred for an extended period of time.

Root is being held on $500,000 bond and has a court date of Nov. 18.
