Bethany Voters Approve Budget At Second Referendum

After the poll closed at 8pm Monday night, the Bethany Registrars announced that the referendum to approve the $22,346,004 budget passed by a vote of 230 to 171.  This budget was revised down from approximately $22.7M after it was defeated at a referendum on June 2.  The Board of Finance achieved the reductions by cutting $100,000 from the major road resurfacing budget and $185,365 from Capital Projects.  The projects that were eliminated are $67,000 to purchase a Mason Dump Truck, $13,365 to replace the fence at the dog park, $15,000 for painting at Bethany Community School and $15,000 for bullet resistant glass at Bethany Community School.  The Land Acquisition Fund was cut from $100,000 to $25,000.  The total budget reduction totaled $285,365.

The Board of Finance met immediately after the vote to set the new mill rate to 33.9 which is calculated on 70% of the appraised value of the real estate and personal property.  Real estate in Bethany underwent a revaluation in October, 2013.
