Crime is a Family Affair for Alleged Woodbridge Burglars

Father and two sons arrested in Florida for burglarizing a Woodbridge home while the owner was inside.

The Woodbridge Police Department has arrested three area men, a father and his two sons, and charged them in connection with a residential burglary that happened in August.

Arrested today were Michael Coons, 47, of 150 Willow St., New Haven, and his two sons, Steven Coons, 22, and Dillion Coons, both of the same address.

Each suspect was charged with second-degree burglary, first-degree larceny, credit card theft, illegal use of a credit card, and conspiracy.

The charges stem from a burglary at a Park Lane residence on Aug. 12. During the burglary, the homeowner was inside when their house was forcibly enterd, police said. The resident reportedly hid and was not found by the burglars.

The burglar alarm was activated; however, the peretrators still managed to enter a bedroom and steal a purse, credit cards and jewelry, according to police.

An investigation by Det. Robert Crowther determined that the victim’s credit cards were used shortly after the crime was committed, and surveillance video footage of the fraudulent transactions led to his identification of the suspects. Further information indicated that the suspects may have fled Connecticut.

The U.S. Marshals Service located the suspects in Florida, and took them into custody. Detectives from the Woodbridge Police Department along with members the New Haven office of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force flew to Tampa, FL, and transported all three suspects back to Connecticut today, Sept. 14.

All three suspects were detained overnight at the Woodbridge Police Department, in lieu of a $300,000 bond. They were scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court Sept. 15 for arraignment.
