Monsignor Gianelli to Retire From Our Lady of the Assumption

Information about a planned farewell celebration is included in Father Gene's letter that was included in the weekly bulletin.

Monsignor Gene E. Gianelli wrote this letter to Our Lady of the Assumption parishioners in the bulletin this weekend. The pastor will retire as of January 29 due to his health.

My Dear Friends,

This week we formally welcome Father Christopher Ford as our new pastor. Join with me in praying for Father as he begins his pastoral ministry among this faith community.

As of early February I will take up residency at Coachman Square, 21 Bradley Road, Suite 214 here in Woodbridge. After some twenty-six years as your pastor there are many possession to be discarded, yet memories and accomplishments will always be kept and cherished. I am thankful to Father Ford for his patience and kindnesses shown me during this transition period.

Many parishioners and parish organizations have asked me about a “farewell” celebration. Reviewing the parish calendar which is extremely busy in February and early March, I would like to gather with you for a Mass on Sunday, March 17 at 11:30AM. Hopefully, if the Office of the Archbishop permits, the Papal Honor given to me can take place at that worship. I ask that you hold the date and join me and my family for this farewell celebration.

I am extremely grateful to all of you for your years of support. I have been humbled to serve as your priest for so many years. As I have said so often: “I am the luckiest person not only to be a priest, but to be with you.”

For the past several months I have not been able to be as active as would have wanted to be. Please do not judge my ministry among you for my inaccessibility. Rather let us fondly celebrate the good things the Lord has done for us… and may Our Lady of the Assumption parish grow from “strength to strength.”

Your Friend,
Father Gene
