Mumps Exposure At Amity High School

School officials are warning students and staff about potential exposure to the virus.

WOODBRIDGE, CT — School officials have warned students and staff about possible exposure to the mumps the week of Dec. 4.

Symptoms may appear as late as Dec. 29 and the exposure timeline could expand if another case develops, according to WTNH.

Mumps is a contagious viral disease that typically starts with a fever, headache and muscle aches followed by swollen salivary glands, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People may develop puffy cheeks and a tender swollen jar during infection.

Prolonged exposure to an infected person increases the chance of infection.

The CDC recommends children get two doses of the MMR vaccine, which is about 88 percent effective in preventing infection. Doses are usually given out between 12 and 15 months and again between 4 and 6-years-old.
