Woodbridge Residents Hide and Call Police While Burglar Is Inside Their Home: Police

Officers caught the suspect, a 36-year-old New Haven man, as he tried to run down a hallway.

WOODBRIDGE, CT — The residents of a Dillon Road home in Woodbridge were able to hide and call police as a burglar rummaged through a downstairs bedroom Sunday morning, according to police.

No injuries were reported. Arrested on charges of second-degree burglary and third-degree larceny was 36-year-old Enrique Bencosme, who was remanded to custody because he is already on parole.

The incident unfolded just before 9 a.m., according to police.

"The residents were in the upstairs level of their home and reported that they had seen an unknown male walking around the outside of the house and then heard the doorbell ring several times," officials wrote in a Facebook post. "A few minutes later the wife heard someone rummaging through the drawers in the bedroom located below her, at which time the residents hid upstairs and called 911."

Woodbridge police officers found a rear exterior door wide open upon their arrival, and soon located Bencosme still inside the home. They apprehended him as he tried to flee down a hallway.

Officers found allegedly found the home owners' jewelry boxes, jewelry, and coins in Bencosme's possession.
