These works have all established their authors as masters of composition. Beethoven’s Trio op.1 #3, was both dynamic and controversial. In this piece, he makes it clear that he is progressing to a new way of composing, and his confident exhilaration is unmistakable. Written in memory of his brother, Daron Hagen’s adaptation of “Wayfaring Stranger” is in the grand tradition of the folk-to-classical genre. This piece brilliantly combines the themes of redemption and deliverance contained in this traditional spiritual, along with classical development and depth, to form a richly haunting and affecting work. In composing his sole piano trio, Maurice Ravel adopted an orchestral approach to create a large, powerful work that stands at the apex of the piano-trio repertoire.Making extensive use of the extreme ranges of each instrument, he developed an unusually rich texture of sound for a chamber work, one which demands a high level of technical proficiency from all three musicians. Part of the work’s brilliance lies in its organization: for all its innovations and multiple sources, this extraordinary piece resides within a conventional classical framework.

We’re excited to invite students in&nbsp;grades 4–7&nbsp;to campus for&nbsp;S.P.A.R.K.—a free, hands-on&nbsp;morning of discovery&nbsp;at Kingswood Oxford on&nbsp;Saturday, May 16.
S.P.A.R.K.&nbsp;stands for&nbsp;Science. Play. Action. Research. Knowledge,&nbsp;and that’s exactly what the morning is all about. Students will dive into interactive labs, ask big questions, and explore how science connects to the world around them.
Throughout the morning, students will rotate through all three engaging sessions:
Snack Science: Cracking the Code of Carbs, Fats &amp; Proteins
Students will test everyday foods to uncover the building blocks of life - carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.
From Cabbage to Chemistry: A Color-Changing Exploration of pH
Using red cabbage as a natural indicator, students will experiment with acids and bases and watch chemistry come alive in vibrant color.
Air Apparent: The Invisible Force All Around Us
Through hands-on experiments, students will explore the properties of air—and discover just how powerful something invisible can be.

Celebrated for his masterful leadership of the Zaccai Curtis Quintet and Sonido Solar, Curtis earned the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album and continues to push musical boundaries with his highly anticipated 2025 release, Sonoluminescence. A visionary artist and co-founder of the TRRcollective label, Curtis has collaborated with legends including Santana, Eddie Palmieri, Christian Scott, and Donald Harrison. His innovative compositions and arrangements have earned him three ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards and prestigious grants, while his educational impact reaches students at the University of Hartford and Western Connecticut State University. A compelling performer and prolific composer, Curtis embodies the vibrant spirit of modern jazz — blending tradition and innovation to create a sound that captivates and inspires audiences worldwide.
