BRANFORD, CT — It seems like this story is told and retold weekly. Pets abandoned, and often in the worst of circumstances and conditions.

The staff at Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter share these stories on social media, and those posts will often have hundreds of views, reactions, and comments. The shelter is more than just a safe place as its name implies. It's a life-saving rescue, a sanctuary, a home until, hopefully, one day they'll have a new family that will care for them. Meanwhile, many of the cases of dumped dogs and cast-aside cats are at once heartbreaking and infuriating.

All three are pregnant, starving, and dehydrated and were covered in urine and feces, the shelter said.

"But of course, we are caring for them all and are providing medical care, have cleaned them up, and are slowly feeding them back to health," Cosgrove Animal Shelter posted on Facebook. "We are not sure what to even say anymore about the lack of humanity that humans display. Get help. Do better. Stop collecting animals."
