Branford Player In Contention at NEWGA Championship

Eight players from Connecticut are in the top 20 after the first round of the New England Women's Golf Association Championship Monday.

SIMSBURY, CT — Quinnipiac University golfer Julia Kemmling of Berlin was the only one of 77 players to break par Monday in the opening round of the 61st New England Women's Golf Association (NEWGA) Championship at Hop Meadow Country Club.

Kemmling fired a 2-under par 71 to assume a two-stroke advantage over Erin Holmes of Maine heading into the second day of the 54-hole championship. She posted three birdies and a single bogey over the initial trek around the 5,749 yard course.
