Obituary: Marie Ziegler (née Nickelsen), 94, of Branford

Born in the Bronx & raised on a German island, she moved back to the US in 1948 and to Branford in 2019, and met best friend, Darlene Dewey.

Marie Ziegler (née Nickelsen) passed away in Branford, CT, on November 22, 2022. She was born on March 27, 1928, in the Bronx, NY to Nanning Nickelsen, a delicatessen entrepreneur, and Keike Nickelsen (née Hinricksen), a homemaker.

Marie was raised on Föhr, an island on the northwest coast of Germany. She returned to New York in 1948 to claim US citizenship. She met and married Bill Ziegler while working in Brooklyn in 1950. Marie worked as a waitress for many years. In 1977 they moved to Twin Rivers, NJ. In 1990 they purchased a home in Calabash NC. Marie moved to Meriden in 2007 to be closer to her family. It was there that she met Darlene Dewey who quickly became her best friend. In 2019 Marie moved to Branford.

Marie is survived by her son Bill Jr. and his wife Agneta of Branford CT, granddaughter Kristina Kramer and her husband Ethan of Northampton MA, granddaughter Amanda and her fiancée Brendan Palko of Southington CT, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Bill Ziegler, her husband of 49 years, and by her brother Nickels and his wife Marret.

The family wishes to thank all Marie’s caregivers, and especially Darlene, whose help and guidance we will always treasure.
