When A Branford Biotech Meets A Injured, Rescued Bird-Of-Prey

Spoiler: It's a happy ending. In business for decades, Branford's Respond Systems' lasers heal horses, dogs, cats and yes, red-tailed hawks.

BRANFORD, CT — What does a Branford biotech company with a global customer base and a birds-of-prey rescue and rehab center in Killingworth have to do with each other?

In a word, lasers.

A Place Called Hope, the wildlife refuge focused on saving and rehabilitating injured hawks, eagles and other birds of prey, shared a Facebook post Tuesday that tells the story about its connection with Respond Systems, a research and manufacturing company in Branford since 1983.

A female red tailed hawk had its leg stuck in a cedar tree. A Place Called Hope said it was likely the result of the hawk hunting a “small mammal when she got lodged in the tree.”

The hawk was rescued and was ultimately placed in the care of APCH. And it was there that the connection between rescue and research meet. And not for the first time.

A Place Called Hope began using Respond Systems’ cold laser therapy treatment tool years ago.

“The many lives this device has touched are countless," the wildlife reahab noted on Facebook. "The success in treatments are noteworthy.”

Respond Systems began manufacturing its “cutting edge” laser therapy decades ago in Branford to “meet the needs of veterinarians and trainers who desired a modality that would provide faster healing and better methods to reduce painful conditions.”

And, it’s noted by the company that the first to use its technology were “owners and trainers of Olympic-level horses and veterinarians with an interest in holistic healing.”

Its laser treatments are used on horses, dogs, cats, large birds, small mammals and even, based on a 2020 Facebook post, a sea lion.

The company’s research and manufacturing facility in Branford also houses its corporate offices, and sales offices, as well as its training department. All the equipment they design is made and serviced in the Branford factory, since 1986. The company notes it has over 10,000 customers world-wide using its therapy systems.”
