2 Teens On A Scooter Injured In Bridgeport Hit-And-Run Crash: Police

The driver of the pickup truck that hit the two victims later turned himself in, according to Bridgeport police.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A 17-year-old and an 18-year-old were seriously injured Wednesday when the scooter they were riding on was struck by a pickup truck on Kossuth Street near Berkshire Avenue in Bridgeport, according to police. The truck fled the scene after the crash, but the driver later surrendered to police.

The extent of the injuries suffered by the two teens was not disclosed, but "lifesaving medical procedures" were performed on one of the victims by American Medical Response personnel following the 5:45 p.m. crash, said Scott Appleby, the city's director of the Office of Emergency Management.

Authorities were notified of the crash by numerous 911 calls.

"Preliminary reports indicated a pickup truck struck two juveniles on a scooter," Appleby said. "The operator and vehicle fled the scene."

In addition to AMR personnel, Bridgeport police and firefighters also responded to the scene, and a portion of Kossuth Street was temporarily closed while authorities investigated. The road has since been reported.

"Both injured occupants from the scooter were taken to the hospital with serious injuries," Appleby said. "It is not known their conditions at this time."

The driver of the vehicle turned himself in after Bridgeport police were able to track down the vehicle, but what charges he faces, if any, has not been disclosed.

"This incident is still an open investigation and is being [investigated] by the Bridgeport Police Accident Reconstruction Team, updates will follow," Appleby said.
