Bridgeport Man Arrested On Murder Charge In Milford: Police

Milford police said the crime "shocked and terrorized this family and community."

MILFORD, CT — A Bridgeport man has been charged with murder in connection to a homicide in Milford in June, police said Friday.

On June 3, a 69-year-old woman called 911 around 3 a.m. and said that two men had entered her East Broadway home.

She was shot in the head and injured. Her husband, Frederick Werner, 69, was shot and killed.

Local police and federal marshals arrested Stuar Lopez-Reyes, 25, Thursday night in New Haven, police said in a press conference livestreamed on WTNH News-8.

Lopez-Reyes was charged with murder, murder in commission of a felony, home invasion and first-degree assault of an elderly person.

He was held on $3 million bond and arraigned Friday morning in Milford Superior Court.

An autopsy on Werner by the state medical examiner revealed the cause of death as gunshot wounds and the manner of death as homicide.

Police Chief Keith Mello said he expects additional arrests will be made.

He said that the "horrific" crime "shocked and terrorized this family and community."

Mello added that the home invasion and shooting were targeted actions. He did not comment on any motive.

Mello said police staff and detectives have worked the case "around the clock" for nearly two months, executing 27 search warrants in the case so far.

He also noted the importance of public and private cameras in capturing evidence used to make the arrest.

Police said that license plate recognition cameras played a "vital" role in identifying the vehicle and suspects involved in the crime.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The woman who was shot has left the hospital and is recovering, Mello said.
