BRIDGEPORT, CT — Aquarion Water Company is warning customers about increased scam activity during the pandemic. Scammers are using more sophisticated and intimidating tactics.

Aquarion said in a statement that customers should be wary or any unsolicited calls, texts, or emails that threaten to shut off your water unless payment is made immediately by phone or other unusual means.

Some common signs of a scam include:

  • Threatening phone calls or home visits demanding immediate payment to avoid a shut off, without prior notification. Don't panic and don't pay.
  • Asking for personal or account information.
  • Insisting on a specific, often non-traceable, form of payment.
  • Providing an unfamiliar callback number.

Aquarion said its representatives will never ask for an instant payment over the phone or in person.

Customers with a past-due balance can sign up for a COVID-19 payment plan which does not require a down payment, and no fees or interest will be charged from the beginning of the pandemic through the end of the plan.
