Bridgeport Firefighter Dies In Rock-Climbing Accident

The department is mourning the loss of Pump Engineer Stephen Buda.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A Bridgeport firefighter is dead following injuries sustained in a rock-climbing accident, according to a Facebook post from the department. Stephen Buda, 56, joined the department in August 2013 and served for eight years as a pump engineer.

"Stephen leaves behind a wife and two children," the post reads. "We will all miss him very much."

The post states that rock climbing was Buda's favorite hobby.

More than 230 people had commented on the post. One commenter said: "You were a good man who always went above and beyond, in your own quiet way. But people noticed. I noticed. And my heart hurts over your loss. Rest in peace my friend."

According to Heart Connecticut, Buda climbed to about 150 feet high in Gardiner, New York where he fell. He was climbing at the Trapps Bridge section of the Mohonk Preserve when he fell, Hearst reports.
