Bridgeport Police Rescue Woman From Burning Car

Police officers lifted a burning car and rescued a driver before the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — Emergency responders performed a rescue of a driver trapped inside a burning car on Tuesday. At 2:15 p.m., Bridgeport police Officer Ramirez arrived at a single-vehicle accident on Chopsey Hill Road, according to a statement.

The vehicle was on its driver side and on fire with a person still inside. Ramirez attempted to get her out through the passenger side window, but the he could not reach her hand. Sgt. Debarros arrived on scene and also attempted to get the driver out by trying to break the front window.

While fire and ambulance units were en route were in route, Sgt. Ken Fortes along with officers Chris Smith, John Knapp, James Motasky, John Asik, Mike Hernandez, Juan Bayas, and those from other sectors across the area arrived on the scene.

As a team, they pushed the burning vehicle back on its wheels and the officers were able to pull the woman out through the passenger window. They carried her to a safe distance while the vehicle became engulfed with flames.

Bridgeport fire arrived on scene to extinguish the fire and American Medical Response transported the party to the hospital.

Mayor Joe Ganim said in a statement, “The men and women of the Bridgeport Police Department put their lives on the line every day in an effort to achieve the goal of saving and protecting lives. The Officers didn’t hesitate to put their lives in risk to save another, and due to their heroic efforts a life was saved.”

“I am very proud of these Officers and the way they worked as a team to save this female party,” stated Chief Armando Perez. “The members of this department go above and beyond daily with the job of protecting our great community in an effort to ensure everyone goes home to their loved ones at the end of the day.”
