Bridgeport Woman Pleads Guilty To Tax Fraud Charges

A Bridgeport tax returner has pleaded guilty to charges that she filed false returns on behalf of clients.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A Bridgeport tax returner pleaded guilty to charges that she prepared false tax returns for clients, according to a statement from federal prosecutors. Veronica Huitzil, 39, operated a tax preparation business and assisted in the filing of 3700 federal tax returns from 2014 to 2018.

Many of those filed returns claimed dependents who were not dependents, deducted thousands of dollars in business losses for fictitious businesses, and included inflated or fabricated medical expenses, charitable contributions and employee business expenses.

Huitzil pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and assisting the filing of a false tax return, an offense that carries a maximum term of imprisonment of three years.

In pleading guilty, Huitzil agreed that losses suffered by the IRS as a result of her fraud totaled $898,665.

Huitzil is released pending sentencing, which is scheduled for May 6, 2020.

This matter is being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher W. Schmeisser.
