Taking the First Step to End Gender-Based Violence! Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® (WAM) is a fun and engaging community awareness event that serves to engage men and boys to take the first step (pun intended) to end violence against women and girls during Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Awareness Month. Funds raised from the walk will support Elizabeth M. Pfriem Camp HOPE America - Bridgeport, CFJ’s evidence-based summer camp and year-long engagement and mentoring program for young people ages 7-17 who have experienced the trauma of domestic and/or sexual violence. Please “Walk a Mile” to help a camper hike a mile this summer! Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is produced by CFJ's Men Against Violence initiative, a group of male community leaders who collaborate with us to take a stand against abuse of women and girls. Everyone is welcome to participate! High heels optional.

GO GREEN AT CONNECTICUT’S BEARDSLEY ZOO’S PARTY FOR THE PLANET ON EARTH DAY
Bridgeport, CT – Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo invites the community to celebrate Earth Day at its annual Party for the Planet, a lively day of wildlife, conservation, and environmental learning. On Saturday, April 25, from 9am - 3pm, guests can explore interactive activities, meet community partners, and discover simple ways to make a significant difference for the planet.

Beardsley Park Community Cleanup: Volunteers will kick off the day by helping beautify Beardsley Park and the waterfront during a community cleanup from 9 am - 12 pm.
DIY Seed Ball Station: Visitors can create their own seed balls using a special mix of soil, seeds, and clay. These seed balls can be planted at home to support pollinators and promote healthy backyard ecosystems.
Energy in Action Mobile Interactive Exhibit: Presented by Energize Connecticut in partnership with Avangrid, this mobile exhibit offers hands-on experiments and interactive demonstrations that teach visitors how energy efficiency and renewable energy can help create a more sustainable future.
One River School of Art &amp; Design Collaboration One River School of Art &amp; Design will highlight the creative use of recycled materials in students’ artwork and invite guests to contribute to a hands-on, conservation-focused community art project.
Wolf Conservation Center The Wolf Conservation Center of South Salem, NY will host an educational table featuring interactive displays, hands-on activities, and resources that highlight their work in wolf conservation and advocacy.
The event will also feature Tesla brining interactive activations and offering guests the opportunity to experience test drives.
The Zoo also thanks AVANGRID and Greater Bridgeport Transit (GBT), the Party for the Planet conservation sponsors, who will be onsite sharing information and resources with visitors.
“Party for the Planet is a celebration of the role each of us can play in protecting wildlife and our environment,” said Dr. Jim Wharton, CEO of Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo. “Through fun activities and community partnerships, we hope to inspire visitors to take meaningful steps toward conservation in their daily lives.”
The event and activities are free with Zoo admission and reflect Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo’s ongoing commitment to conservation, sustainability, and education. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about environmental initiatives while enjoying a memorable day at the Zoo.

Join us Sunday, April 26th at City Lights Gallery for an artists' talk featuring the talented creators of the works in "FAT/PHAT: Culture, Language, Morphology."
To paraphrase Shakespeare: “What’s in a word?” What is the impact of an utterance, a sound rife with cultural interpretation? For this exhibit at City Lights Gallery artists are asked to submit work responding to the concept of these 2 words, fat and phat, that sound the same, are spelt differently, and have different meanings. Among the range of social and cultural interpretations (but not limited to) are body image, oversized fashion and popular culture, imagery, spoken word, music, socio-economic status, positive and negative affirmation.
For those struggling with maintaining a healthy weight and growing up during the ultra-skinny “Twiggy” era or the current Ozempic craze, the plague of negative body image is an unending nag, affecting all aspects of daily life and sense of self-worth.
Contrastingly, the word PHAT with its roots in popular Hip Hop culture is short for emphatic or slang used to positively describe a person’s physical appearance; it can also be used to describe other things that someone enjoys, such as music or food. Others claim PHAT is an acronym signifying Pretty Hot And Thick. Thick in this sense, is another word for fleshy, as a desirable attribute. In this case Fat is Phat. The viewer may be prompted by the question, “Is Fat Phat?”

The College Access Collaborative of Connecticut 

The College Access Collaborative of Connecticut (CAC) is a community based educational consulting organization focused on improving college access, financial aid completion, and postsecondary readiness for first generation, multilingual, adult, and historically underserved students across Connecticut. CAC partners with high schools, adult education programs, nonprofits, and community organizations to provide hands on support with FAFSA completion, AACTUS guidance for undocumented and mixed status students, college applications, scholarship navigation, and enrollment planning. Services are delivered through workshops, small group sessions, and individualized advising, particularly during peak college and financial aid seasons when schools are often stretched beyond capacity. CAC’s work is designed to strengthen and extend existing counseling and outreach efforts, not replace them. What makes CAC distinct is its relationship centered and culturally responsive approach. Programming is offered in English, Haitian Creole, and Spanish, ensuring families who are often excluded from the college process due to language or system barriers can fully participate and make informed decisions. CAC emphasizes clarity over jargon, follow through over one time events, and outcome driven support that helps organizations track progress in FAFSA completion, college applications, and enrollment. Founded by educator and college access professional Looney Chery; CAC was created after years of working directly with students and families navigating complex college and financial aid systems with limited individualized support. CAC exists to close these gaps by combining professional expertise, lived experience, and strong community relationships.
