CTDOT Worker In Fatal Crash Was Bridgeport Resident: Mayor Ganim

BRIDGEPORT, CT — The Connecticut Department of Transportation worker who was fatally struck by a vehicle on I-95 in Fairfield on Friday was a Bridgeport resident, Mayor Joe Ganim announced.

Elvin Hernandez was killed in a 10:35 a.m. crash on the highway southbound near exit 21. He was doing road maintenance work when he was struck.

"I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Elvin Hernandez, a Bridgeport resident and Connecticut Department of Transportation employee who lost his life today while on the job on I-95 in Fairfield," Mayor Ganim said in a statement. "This is a heartbreaking loss for his family and friends, and for our Bridgeport community. Every day, CTDOT workers put themselves in harm’s way to keep our roads safe and our state moving. Today we are reminded of the tremendous risks they face in service to the public."

A Derby resident, 60-year-old Edward Myers, has been arrested on a host of charges in connection with the crash, including second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, Connecticut State Police announced.

State police said that Myers admitted that he had used heroin before the crash.

Gov. Ned Lamont said state government also mourns the passing of Hernandez.

"My prayers are with Elvin’s family, friends, and CTDOT colleagues," the governor said. "Connecticut state government is grieving one of our employees who dedicated themselves to serving the public."

"On behalf of the City of Bridgeport, I extend my deepest condolences to Mr. Hernandez' family and all those who knew and worked alongside him," Ganim said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this time."
