Former DMV Worker Accused Of Stealing $80K From Bridgeport Office

The suspect, a Bridgeport resident, allegedly forged documents and pocketed the sales tax from vehicle transactions.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A 47-year-old former Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicle employee has been arrested in connection with the theft of $79,907.59 from the department's Bridgeport office, state police announced.

Kimberly Brown, of Hazelwood Avenue in Bridgeport, surrendered to state police Thursday and was arrested on a warrant charging her with first-degree larceny by defrauding a public community and first-degree forgery.

She a motor vehicle examiner specialist who was the focus of a months-long investigation into monetary discrepancies at the Bridgeport office. Brown was fired in early December.

According to the warrant application, Brown allegedly forged documents to falsely say that vehicle sales were between immediate family members, which means the transaction is tax exempt. But the seller would still pay a sales tax, which she allegedly kept.

"Our hundreds of employees are diligent and dedicated to upholding the public’s trust. People who betray that trust will be held fully accountable for their actions," said DMV Commissioner Michael R. Bzdyra in a statement. "It is absolutely unacceptable to betray that trust. Our hard-working employees strive diligently every day to do their jobs well and are committed to customer service."
