"With a dedication to customer service, satisfaction, and hospitality, our family owned and operated business strives to make you feel like family! Luigi's has helped people from all over the New England area and beyond to ensure their event is a joyful one," the bakery's website states.

In 1985 the New York Times profiled the bakery in an in-depth article. The Times story began with Luigi's Bakery agreeing to bake a wedding cake for 425. And while that alone is not unusual, what is, is that they flew the cake and a baker to Wisconsin to assemble the special cake for the big day.

At the time of the New York Times article, the bakery held the Guinness Book of World Records for the world's largest cherry pie, which "measured 8 feet 4 inches in diameter."

And in the did you know category, John DiMarco, of Luigi's baked a bun to accompany the then world's largest Big Mac, which weighed in at 410 pounds, the New York Times reports. The monster-sized Big Mac was for the opening of a Ronald McDonald House for seriously ill children in New York.

Luigi's closure would mark another sad loss of an iconic Bridgeport shop. Sorrento Importing Company closed its Bridgeport location after a fire in 2018. It reopened on Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield Jan. 16.
