Mayor Ganim Thanks Bridgeport Voters For Primary Election Victory

BRIDGEPORT, CT — Incumbent Mayor Joe Ganim on Wednesday thanked Bridgeport voters for his victory in Tuesday's court-mandated primary election over challenger John Gomes.

According to unofficial results from the Connecticut Secretary of State's Office, Ganim received 4,971 votes, to Gomes' 3,894.

Yesterday, thousands of Bridgeport Democrats participated in the Special Primary Election to make their voices heard. In fact, in-person and overall turnout in the Special Primary increased significantly over the September 12th Primary. Ultimately, the Secretary of the State reports an incredible outcome of 4,971 (56%) votes to 3,894 (43%). With a strong margin of victory of 1,077 votes (a 13% margin), the people of Bridgeport have spoken with confidence and hope in Joe Ganim and his ability to lead the city for the next four years.

Gomes and other Ganim challengers have not yet decided if they will continue the effort to unseat him in a general election on Feb. 27, the Connecticut Post reported.

"I want to thank the people of Bridgeport whose faith, support, and confidence in a shared vision made this victory a reality," Ganim said in a statement. "I am moved and grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the people of the City of Bridgeport. I asked the residents to come out and make a strong statement with their votes, and they responded. The results show a turnout and plurality of victory that both greatly exceeded the September primary."
