Obituary: John Charles Winchell, 88, Formerly Of Bridgeport

An active member of the community, John was a Boy Scout leader, a Park City Little League coach and president of the St. Ambrose School PTA.

John Charles Winchell, 88, of Orange, CT, beloved husband of the late Margaret Kiely Winchell, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2018 at Silver Springs Care Center, Meriden, CT. The son of Charles and Mary (Healy) Winchell, he was born in New York City on December 9, 1929.

A graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served during the Korean Conflict. A lifelong railroad engineer and proud union member, he began his career with the New York Central Railroad and retired from Metro-North. He was a longtime resident of Bridgeport, CT, where he moved his young family in 1959.

An active member of the community, John was a Boy Scout leader, a Park City Little League coach and president of the St. Ambrose School PTA. He was a founding member of the Holy Infant Church Council of the Knights of Columbus, and was a longtime Third Degree Knight.

He enjoyed fishing, golf and travel. He is survived by his brother, Charles Winchell (Irene); his sons, John S. Winchell (Heidi) and Charles Winchell (Annmarie); his daughter, Margaret Pansa (Vincent); his grandchildren, Lyle Huneke, Stephen and David Winchell, Michael, Lauren and Samantha Pansa and Jonathan and Kyleigh Winchell; his great-grandchildren, Lyle, Gia, Lily and Braylon; and several nieces and nephews. In addition of his wife, he was predeceased by his daughter, Jeanne Huneke, his son-in-law, Mark Huneke, and his granddaughter, Kara Huneke.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, January 24 at 11:00 AM at Holy Infant Church, Orange. Interment will follow at Orange Center Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 4pm – 8pm on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at CODY-WHITE FUNERAL HOME, 107 Broad Street, Milford, CT.
