Hattem, exploring how Americans have debated and reinterpreted the meaning of the Revolutionary War for more than 250 years. From the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution to modern political and social movements, the program examines how different generations have reshaped the legacy of the nation’s founding to reflect the issues of their own time. Hattem is an American historian, with interests in early America, the American Revolution, and historical memory. He received his PhD in History at Yale University and has taught at The New School and Knox College. He is the author of&nbsp;The Memory of ’76: The Revolution in American History&nbsp;(Yale University Press, 2024), which was a finalist for the 2025 George Washington Prize, and&nbsp;Past and Prologue: Politics and Memory in the American Revolution&nbsp;(Yale University Press, 2020).
Hattem’s work has been featured or mentioned in&nbsp;The New York Times,&nbsp;TIME&nbsp;magazine,&nbsp;The Smithsonian Magazine,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Washington Post, as well as many other mainstream media publications and outlets. He has served as a historical consultant or contributor for a number of projects and organizations, curated historical exhibitions, appeared in television documentaries, and authenticated and written catalogue essays for historical document auctions. He is currently the Associate Director of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute.This event is part of Past, Present, and Pages, a program initiative developed by the Trumbull Library in celebration of America's 250. These programs explore history, literature, music, art, and community stories, highlighting the people, ideas, and events that connect the past to the present. History Lecture - The Memory of '76: The Revolution in American History

Shubert Theatre

New Haven Ballet Presents The Sleeping Beauty at the Shubert Theatre
This spring, New Haven Ballet invites audiences across Greater New Haven to experience the magic of classical ballet with The Sleeping Beauty, coming to the historic Shubert Theatre on Saturday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m.
Perfect for young audiences and longtime dance lovers alike, this enchanting production brings Princess Aurora’s beloved story to life through storybook magic and the sweeping score of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Thoughtfully adapted for today’s audiences, the performance offers a welcoming introduction to ballet while keeping all the beauty and wonder that has made this fairytale a classic for generations.
The heart of this production is the dancers themselves.
Students ages 4 to 18 will take the stage after months of dedication and artistic growth, sharing a performance that celebrates not only technique, but creativity, confidence, and joy. For many young performers, it’s a meaningful milestone and a chance to experience the excitement of live theater together.
For more than 40 years, New Haven Ballet has helped young dancers grow both on and off the stage, with many students continuing on to prestigious summer intensives, conservatories, and professional dance careers.
In addition to The Sleeping Beauty, the program will feature contemporary and Broadway inspired works, along with performances by the School’s Shared Ability artists. Together, the pieces reflect New Haven Ballet’s commitment to creating a space where every dancer can learn, grow, and shine.
Artistic Director Lisa Kim shares, “This performance is a chance for our students to come together and share what they have been working toward all year. We hope it inspires everyone in the audience.”
Following the performance, children and families are invited to meet the fairies from the ballet, a magical moment younger audience members won’t soon forget.
With a running time of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission, the performance is ideal for both first time balletgoers and devoted fans of dance.
