Warner Theater Remembered

ANOTHER PIECE OF BRIDGEPORTS'HISTORY

Back in the day theaters were plentiful,CABLEVISION did not exist yet. Many people went to the movies years back and at a reasonable price way cheaper than a PAY PER VIEW on tv today.Usually movie houses showed two movies, cartoons as well as WORLD WIDE NEWS all usually at twenty five cents or less.

ON STATE STREET in Bridgeport was the WARNER THEATER which had had several name changes over the years. This CINEMA TREASURE was located just adjacent to what now is HOUSATONIC COLLEGE.Some folks might remember this theater as THE DAWES'THEATERwhich opened in 1921 Later it came to be known as THE CAMEO THEATER IN 1924.Then in 1925 WARNER BROTHERS took over the property calling it THE WARNER CAMEO THEATER.IN AUGUST 1938 it opened as THE WARNER THEATER.For years it was a focal point of the movie industry with the latest HOLLYWOOD productions. Then as fate would change things it closed in JUNE 2-1963 and demolished in FEBRUARY 1964 joining the list of theater closings over the years in our city.ODDLY enough the last movie shown there was titled ''THE LAST SUNSET'.IT was if that was an omen relative to its' closing.
